Education doesn't stop because schools close

Royal Albert Hall helping to deliver on the promise of Digital Britain

LONDON, ENGLAND, January 17, 2010 /E-Learning PR News/ -- Showtime, the new e-learning resource launched this week at BETT by the Royal Albert Hall, experienced overwhelming interest from schools, home-educators and even institutions as far away as Sweden.

In the first few days of its launch over 50 successful downloads have been completed with significant engagement expected for this free learning resource. When much of the country is experiencing significant problems due to the 'adverse weather conditions' and many schools close, Showtime is already ensuring students do not miss out on valuable education.

"Sometimes schools have to close but that shouldn't mean that education must stop," said Alastair Tallon, Head of Learning & Participation at the Royal Albert Hall. "Schools and educators will be required to report the functional skills of their pupils from September. Closures and interruption to lessons are not going to be taken into account. Digital Britain needs to be demonstrated in education as well as in the workplace. Over the past decade industries have worked hard to provide staff with flexible working conditions and opportunities to work from home. Children shouldn't be forgotten. By encouraging students to engage during the snow days with free educational resources they can download from home, opportunities for long-term learning are more optimistic."

Showtime provides support to both teachers and home-schooled pupils to help place functional skills into context by showing how English, Maths and ICT work behind the scenes at the world-famous entertainment venue. It has received excellent endorsement from teachers and schools whom trialed the resource before the launch and pupils have also shared their opinion on Showtime. http://www.royalalberthall.com/explore/showtime/testimonials.aspx

"What's better than a free resource? A free brilliant resource." Michael Hatfield, Assistant Principal, Trent Valley Academy in Lincolnshire, UK.

"I didn't realise how much Maths and ICT was important. I really felt that Showtime made me feel part of the team, as though I was there and living the moment." Trent Valley Academy student, Lincolnshire, UK.

"It's new; it's different to everything else because it gives you real life situations." Trent Valley Academy student, Lincolnshire, UK.

The Showtime resource, downloadable to any PC, is an interactive multimedia programme that demonstrates how the Royal Albert Hall staff, in a variety of roles, use elements of English, Maths and ICT in every working day. Each Showtime unit introduces a member of the Hall's staff and explains the jobs they do. From learning about the importance of grammar and punctuation in the marketing department, to using Maths equations to solve lighting problems, the visually attractive resources use real people, in real work environments, solving real problems.

Showtime has been funded by the Royal Albert Hall with additional support from the Garfield Weston Foundation: http://www.royalalberthall.com/showtime.aspx

The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK's most treasured and distinctive buildings, recognisable the world over. Unlike many of its competitors, it operates without any public subsidy. Since its opening in 1871, it has an unparalleled history of exceptional performances by the world's leading artists from every kind of performance genre. This shared experience of the best of live performance is now enjoyed by well over a million people each year at the Hall and by many millions more around the world through broadcasts, recordings and new media channels.

Royal Albert Hall Learning & Participation aims to spark imagination, inspire creativity and open doors to new experiences and audiences. It works with over 30,000 participants each year, including children, students, teachers, home educators, families and other groups, creating a range of opportunities for them to engage with the Royal Albert Hall. It does this without receiving any central or local government funding and is reliant on both the Hall's own funding and that of trusts, foundations, companies and individuals who have kindly offered their support.

Each year, Learning & Participation organises a range of projects, school matinees, performances and tours that involve people of all ages and sections of society. Since the department's launch in 2003, these have covered topics as diverse as dance, music, history, citizenship, science, film and media, literacy, maths, art and design, and fashion and textiles. It is wholly committed to engaging with groups who might not otherwise have the opportunity to come to the Hall.
