Independence Hall Association Launches Free, Comprehensive, Online U.S. History Textbook
The Independence Hall Association (IHA) in Philadelphia released today the first, entirely free digital textbook for middle- and high-school students. The new online textbook's home is ushistory.org/us.
WARRENTON, VA, October 13, 2008 /E-Learning PR News/ -- The Independence Hall Association (IHA) in Philadelphia released today the first, entirely free digital textbook for middle- and high-school students. The new online textbook's home is ushistory.org/us. The site - ushistory.org - is one of the most trafficked (over 3 million pages view monthly) online repositories of American history, and a site that is owned and operated by IHA. In releasing this new digital textbook, the IHA's mission is to encourage students and challenge them "to probe, dispute, dig deeper inquire" about historical events.
Leveraging the power of technology and digital resources, ushistory.org helps make history more relevant, engaging and meaningful for students. The first version of the e-book released today draws upon the vast resources available on the Internet to deliver one of the most comprehensive and current accounts of American history from the pre-Columbian times to the millennium.
"Our digital textbook presents history in a medium where today's students live, learn, communicate and thrive. We hope teachers will use this new resource to get students excited about history and help them develop a deeper understanding about how historic events influence the direction of our country," said Jonathan Schmalzbach, the Executive Director of the Association. "History is not static. It changes, grows, becomes richer and more complex when any individual interacts with it. Our challenge and charge is to present history in a way that will excite students and turn them into passionate, active citizens."
Renowned historians, authors and educators who have been experts in U.S. history supplied expert advice and guidance to IHA as the textbook was developed. Starting with a chapter on Native American society and the British colonization, the online textbook walks students through over 400 pages of important historical events and presents opportunities for them to delve deeper topics. The final chapter of the e-book provides a detailed account of the Information age and technology's influence on our world today.
In creating the online textbook, the IHA consulted academic standards set by states and traditional course outlines to ensure that the narrative telling of U.S. History would help teachers meet state requirements. The group has plans to supply additional content and resources to the course regularly. As the online textbook evolves, IHA will add, when educationally appropriate, interactive displays, video streaming, simulations or dynamic versions of the text, and opportunities for Web 2.0 type participation by students and teachers.
The IHA is a non-profit organization founded in 1942 to spearhead the creation of Independence National Historical Park. In 1995, the group expanded is mission and created ushistory.org to support and broaden their overall mission of educating the public about the Revolutionary and Colonial eras of American history, as well as Philadelphia generally. USHistory.org is owned and operated by the IHA.
